Flameless electric combustion device — handheld lineup

Eburn Device FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about the Eburn flameless electric combustion device — how it's flameless, whether it's genuinely windproof and waterproof, battery and charging, the materials it's made of, and eligibility. If you don't see your question, the how it works and specifications pages cover the device in more depth.

The basics

What is the Eburn device?

It's a compact, rechargeable, flameless electric combustion device. Instead of an open flame from a lighter, it uses an internal electric heating element to reach combustion temperature on demand. You supply the dry botanical material of your choice; the device supplies the heat.

Is it really flameless?

Yes. There is no open flame and no fuel. Heat comes entirely from an electric element powered by a rechargeable battery — the same basic principle as the coil in an electric stovetop. See how the Eburn device works for the step-by-step mechanism.

How is it different from a lighter?

A lighter burns fuel to make an exposed flame, which wind, water and cold can defeat. The Eburn device has no flame to defeat — the electric element does the job a flame used to, but it's shielded inside the device body and powered by a battery instead of butane.

Windproof & waterproof

Is it really windproof?

Yes. Because there's no open flame, there's nothing for wind to blow out. A gust that would snuff a lighter has no effect on whether the electric element heats. More detail on windproof and waterproof by design.

Is it really waterproof?

The device body is sealed to resist rain, spray and splashes, so getting wet doesn't stop it the way a wet lighter would. Treat any specific water-resistance rating as device-specific and check the specifications for the exact rating and any limits — it's built to shrug off the elements, not to be soaked or submerged beyond its rated limit.

Will it work in the cold?

Yes. There's no butane to vaporize, which is what causes fuel lighters to fail in the cold, so a frigid day doesn't prevent the element from reaching operating temperature.

Battery & charging

How does it charge?

Over USB-C — the same connector that charges most modern phones and laptops. You can charge it from a wall adapter, a laptop, a portable power bank, or a vehicle USB port.

How long does a charge last?

Battery capacity and sessions-per-charge are being finalized with our product team and will be listed on the specifications page. Because it recharges from any USB-C source, a small power bank keeps it going on multi-day, off-grid trips.

Is there any fuel to buy?

No. There's no butane, lighter fluid or wick. The only thing to keep topped up is the battery.

Materials & care

What's it made of?

Core components use stainless steel and glass inside a durable, sealed housing built for outdoor use. Full material details are on the specifications page.

What can I put in it?

The Eburn device is substance-agnostic and ships empty. You supply the dry botanical material of your choice, used within your local laws and at your own responsibility. Think of the device as the heat source — like a windproof lighter — rather than something tied to a specific material.

How do I clean it?

Use the included maintenance tool to keep the heating chamber clear of residue, and wipe the body down rather than soaking it. See the care section of the specifications.
